Flute
* What are your educational achievements (i.e.
college/university achievements)?
I have a Masters degree (MM) in flute performance from
Indiana University (Bloomington), 2005. During that time, I played principal in
the top orchestra 3 consecutive semesters and won the concerto competition. I
earned a Bachelors degree (BM) in flute performance from Webster University in
St. Louis. I also played principal flute in the Webster Symphony all four years
and won the concerto competition twice.
* How many years have you been playing?
17 years
* How many years have you been teaching?
12 years
* What year did you start teaching at Mozingo Music?
2009
* What are your musical highlights or debuts?
Highlights for me include playing the Rouse Concerto with
the orchestra at IU, performing solo recitals in Illinois, Kentucky, and
Missouri, appearing at the 2007 National Flute Association convention as a
qualifying participant of the Young Artist Competition, being the founding
member of the experimental music ensemble, The Humours, and playing in many
orchestras.
* What are some musicians or bands you look up to or
looked up to when you were studying your instrument?
As I was studying, I admired Paula Kasica ( my first
teacher), the members of the St. Louis Symphony, James Galway, Carol Wincenc,
and Jeanne Baxstresser.
* What styles of music can you offer to your students?
I am well-trained in classical flute, although I have
experience in experimental and improvisational ensembles, as well as modern
worship teams (contemporary Christian styles and more traditional sacred
styles). I feel comfortable in coaching any of these styles with my students,
to meet whatever needs they might have.
* What bands (if applies) have you played with (include current)?
I have played in several orchestras in the St. Louis
area- most recently, I am principal flutist of the St. Louis Philharmonic
Orchestra. I have also appeared with the Paducah Symphony, the Columbus,
Indiana Philharmonic, and the Indiana University Festival Orchestra.
* What books do you use for your beginner students?
I generally use the Rubank Elementary methods for
beginners, introducing E. Wagner's "Foundations for Flute Playing"
during the first year. I like to work with students to find out what music they
might enjoy, while incorporating pieces that I feel will suit the player and
help them to grow.
Professional Objectives
To maintain and nourish a career as a professional
flutist, while aspiring to ever reach a higher level of mastery and
musicianship, sharing these abilities with others, in the capacity of teaching,
performing, community outreach, and sacred music, and inspiring them to explore
their own musical expressions.
